A Year Through God's Eyes

Psalm 8
This Psalm is probably the first famous on in this lengthy part of the Bible. It is the one that asks "Who are we that You are mindful of us?" (v. 4), but oddly enough this phrase is not the one that speaks to me tonight. Rather it is verse 2: "You have taught children and nursing infants to give you praise, they silence Your enemies who were seeking revenge." as well as the final verse of the chapter: "...the majesty of Your name fills the Earth."
I have always found it oddly unsettling to watch a news program any time they talk about a person on death row, or someone that most people would consider the scum of the earth and wonder how they got there. When I look at my daughter, I can't help but hope the best things in life for her, yet that is not what everyone is given. It always strikes me that small choices made along the way in our daily lives will one day have a major impact not only on us, but everyone we hold dear. Verse 2 speaks of this a little to say that the praise of young children which is taught by God Himself will be used to silence His enemies. What an amazing word picture! It is made more amazing by the fact that often times it is true. This theory is proven correct in a wonderful Christmas classic film "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" when the Grinch has to explain his dastardly actions to Cindy Lou Who (who was no more than two). Confronted with the innocent bluntness of a child, the Grinch has to think rather quickly on his feet.
The final part of the psalm didn't really affect me when it was spoken in the first verse, but at the end I was struck by the way it was phrased when David puts down that merely the name of God fills the entire Earth with the glory of His presence. We don't even need to see His face, hear His voice, or see Him move. All we have to do is speak His name and the entire Earth is filled with His glory, leaving no place for the darkness of our sin to hide. What a wonderfully terrible thought!

It is terribly wonderful isn't it? That's why I love Psalm 18, takes that idea and runs with it in a personification of God that always takes my breath away! P.S. Missed you this morning!!!
